Completed the toll section after staying in Landec on the 7th June 2009. The toll is 10 Euro but well worth the cost and tends to limit the number of users on the road. The upward section from Galtur is superb, there is only one long(ish) straight the rest is great forward vision and definately knee down bits f0or those who dare. A stop at the lake Silvretta Strausee at the top is a most for the photos and a cuppa. Then the downward section is lots of hairpins so make syure your brakes are up to scratch. You will be tempted to turn around at the booth at the other end and do it all again - 22Kms of sheer excitement. Ive added the upward section from the toll booth on the video section, my bike is the Triumph ST1050 with the sports exhaust - can you tell!!
Ive done this pass a couple of times now, its much better than it appears on the map! Its very seductive & lures you into pushing harder & harder, until you realise, usually half way down the western side, that youre actually running out of brakes! And yes, that is the bar youre hitting! But you dont want to slow now! Its f*****g great!!!
This is one trick bit of road. Simply laid-out and built for bikes! The valleys on both the Eastern & Western sides of the pass are not especially spectacular - unless you are a keen skiier and the calendar is on winter time. But the top portion - the Hochalpenstrasse - between Galtür and Partenen including the sharp descent just above Partenen is absolutely outstanding. And theres not a lot of trafic on that stretch, so you can gas it a bit. Well, a lot, actually...! Always check if the Silvretta is open before you go (usually June - October)! Ride safely! - but have fun! :o)
